The Rock Hotel Gibraltar: Nice but Not for Me!

June 9th, 2008

The Rock HotelMy fiance and I are currently travelling around Spain in search of wedding locations for next year. We decided to have a look around Gibraltar as we need to do the legal bits and pieces over there.

Our first thoughts were lots of building work, birds (and therefore bird poo) and not a lot to do in the area. We booked into the Rock Hotel for four nights but after one night we were board and realised we were paying far too much for our room so we checked out the following day to find somewhere a bit more modern and relaxing.

They were charging £150 per night for a junior suite that was nice but outdated, had large cobwebs in the corner and was not all that great. The bathroom however was really nice.

The pool was also nice but you have to cross a busy road covered in roadworks and cones to get to it. We only went to the pool once and while there a bird decided we would make a nice toilet! We soon upped and left! We were shown a beautiful area by the pool where we could have our wedding reception but the location of the hotel spoiled the mood a little.

On a chirpier note, my fiance had an Argentinian steak in the hotel restaurant one evening and said it was the best steak he had ever tasted. We may even go back there on the way to Gibraltar airport just so he can have another!

So all in all if you are in Gibraltar and fancy a nice meal, the restaurant serves some lovely food (and sangria) but if you are looking for a peaceful getaway in luxurious surroundings, stay clear!

Luxor Hotel: Viva Las Vegas

June 9th, 2008

Luxor HotelIf you’re planning a trip to Vegas, what can I say except Lucky You! It’s like being a child in a sweet shop, you won’t know what to do with yourself! I visited last year and am contemplating eloping there with my fiance now we have realised how stressful it is planning a wedding, especially one abroad! Only kidding …

There are loads of places to stay in Vegas and I’m sure you will have heard of many of them from films such as Oceans 11. The Luxor is a newer hotel and is what you would expect from a Las Vegas masterpiece, OTT very OTT. The hotel is magnificent, shaped like an ancient Egyptian pyramid, it certainly stands out and is just a fabulous inside as out. As you enter the hotel you are greeted by giant Egyptian styled statues and a water feature ready for your photographs.

A super modern feel is experienced through the whole of the reception area and outdoors to the pool where I believe a new pool has recently been built. As you enter the elevator to your bedroom you will notice you are moving at an angle rather than vertically which is an odd feeling at first but you get used to the shape of the hotel soon enough.

The bedrooms are nice but need a bit of an uplift, the showers are amazing, absolutely huge and ours was very powerful. The rooms do not have balconies due to the shape of the hotel but are very spacious and let’s face it, if you’re in Vegas, you won’t be spending too much time in the room!

Casinos, casinos, casinos, everywhere you look, you will lose all track of time especially if your flight is ten hours like ours and you’re so jet lagged day and night roll into one!

If you stay at the Luxor take advantage of the buffet but don’t eat for days in advance so you can sample the wonderful variety they offer. I’ve never seen a buffet quite like it – if you’re on a diet, my advice is to make a fresh start on your return home.

The hotel consists of casinos, bars, restaurants, a fast food court, iMax theatre and a few simulators etc. It’s great and probably like nothing you’ve experienced before if this is your first time in Vegas. If you get a chance go and see some of the shows, I watched a comedy act and it was fab, friends of ours saw the Cirque Du Soleil while we were there and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Marquee Night Club – New York

May 11th, 2008

marquee-night-club-new-york-2.jpgApart from the fantastic shopping and the endless list of tourist attractions another reason to visit New York would be the nightlife.

Marquee is one club not to be missed if you’re a fan of the hip hop and rock n roll party scene. Popular with the New York natives and the famous models, singers and actors the club has seen some great press. Not just for the glamorous guests but for the glamorous venue too. Two stylish main rooms with small dancing areas, plenty of modern black leather sofas and two huge bars Marquee is one club not too be missed and is located just around the corner from Bungalow 8 in the Chelsea neighbourhood.

Visit the website for more information on club nights and venue.

Super Sassy Sunglasses

April 17th, 2008

bottega-veneta-sunglasses.jpgIts quite a well known fact that most women buy designer sunglasses as that’s for some as close as they will get to owning anything designer so why not get the best this 2008 from Harvey Nichols online.

The selection of sunglasses is amazing but I’ve fallen for the Bottega Veneta BV58/S 807 LF sunglasses in black with 100% UVA and UVB protection. With classic round black acetate frames and graduated grey lenses these sunglasses make for a super chic and feminine look. For some reason I picture either a lovely headscarf or neckachief and a large tote to be the perfect accessories with the glasses.

Get yourself a pair from Harvey Nichols online costing £175.

Essence – Kingston Upon Thames

April 7th, 2008

On a recent adventure to Kingston Upon Thames my friends and I decided to try out Essence. The fairly recently opened nightclub has been widely acclaimed so we went to see what the fuss was about.

Rumours did not lie, the décor was pleasant and colourful, the music was great, drinks were reasonably priced and the evening was a success. I’m told Wednesday and Thursday evenings are certainly the best nights there with a cool clientele and a lively atmosphere. There are also monthly Hed Kandi events for those hard core house music fans.

Essence can be found on the River Thames at Bucklands Wharf in Kingston. Visit the Essence Style Bar online for more information.

Pitcher & Piano – Nottingham

February 18th, 2008

Although Pitcher & Piano is a chain company with hot spot restaurant and bar venues around the UK, the one in Nottingham has a certain speciality about it.

The venue is actually an old church, with a sleek and stylish interior. The cocktail and wine menu is extensive and the music is a mixture of pop, RnB and cheese which for a night out can be a good combination. With a cool vibe and a sophisticated crowd, the Pitcher & Piano located in the Lace Market in Nottingham is well worth a visit.

See the website for more information on the company, other venues across the country and the menus.
